1 Peter 2:2: “Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that you may grow up into your salvation.”
Yesterday we learned about carrying out the trash. Today, we are talking about bringing in the groceries. Seems like every few days I carry out the trash and bring in new groceries. Peter told us to get rid of deceit, malice, slander, and hypocrisy in verse 1. Carry it out and get rid of it. Then, Peter told us (v.2) to desire the pure milk of the word of God. We need to bring in the groceries. Healthy Christians do both.
Have you ever heard a baby cry because of hunger? The sound pierces the air and provokes action. You can not ignore the hungry cry. A child needs groceries in order to grow. The hunger of a child distinguishes youth from adulthood. Bones are growing when you are a child. The body functions at a heightened level of performance during the growth phases of infancy. A newborn will triple in size in 15 months which causes high demand for food. If an adult tripled in size then I would be 18' tall and weigh 510 pounds.
God has called us to hunger for His word as if we were a child. You need to put yourself where you can hear the word of God. Every Sunday and Wednesday, we teach the word of God on our campus so that people can be fed the truth. We grow into our salvation as we feed on the word of God. Have you ever bought pants that were too big for your child and said: “He will grow into them?” Our youngest son grew 2" in 60 days. His pants were too long and then they were too short. God says that we need to grow into our salvation by feasting on His word.
Lord, may we hunger like newborn babies for the word of God.
