Apr 14 - The Last Passover and the Lord’s Supper

Matthew 26: 26-30: “As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take and eat it; this is My body.” Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, He gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood that establishes the covenant; it is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins. But I tell you, from this moment I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it in a new way in My Father’s kingdom with you.” After singing psalms, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Have you ever lost your song? My former pastor, Bob Pitman, used to preach on this text and tell of a season when he lost his song. His grandchildren were suffering with physical disabilities and it broke his heart and caused him to become so discouraged he no longer wanted to sing. He found this text and it revived his heart. It was the last day of Jesus' life and He was eating with His disciples and singing hymns.

I was with Linda in the delivery room when each of our sons were born. Pain and suffering gave way to celebration and gladness. When Linda saw her babies, the struggle faded into place and a greater joy took over. It took me days to recover and all I did was watch.

Jesus was in the delivery room, beginning to prepare for His suffering and death. But He was not in a moment of dread because of the suffering. He was expecting the glorious result - a future kingdom and a eternal celebration. Jesus was at such peace, He sang hymns with the disciples.

Jesus explained His death and suffering would bring forgiveness. His blood would establish the new covenant. This covenant would endure until we reunite with the Lord in the everlasting kingdom. We receive these things through the work of Christ upon the cross. He died for us. Now may we live for Him.

Have you lost your song? Christ has a plan for you. He suffered to make you whole. Now celebrate for our Lord has come.
