March 3 - Focus On The Eternal

(Matt. 6:19-21 )

Visual acuity is a number that indicates the sharpness or clarity of vision. An individual with perfect vision (without the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses) will have a visual acuity measurement of 20/20. He can see clearly with no impairments. Many individuals, however, require some kind of corrective lens to help them bring objects into focus.

Sometimes in life, our “spiritual” eyes lose their 20/20 focus. Sometimes our vision becomes “blurred” when we invest so much of our time in those things that are not eternal. We focus only on the temporary—those things that give us pleasure in the here and now. The lenses of our “spiritual” eyes need to be corrected and our focus needs to be redirected.

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth.” (v. 19) He is indicating that there is no security in material things. Any type of material treasure on earth can be either destroyed by elements of nature (moth or rust) or stolen by thieves. (v.20) Jesus is saying that the only investments not subject to loss are treasures in heaven. Jesus does not forbid the accumulation of wealth, but He does command that it not be treasured because it can be lost.

In verse 21, Jesus tells us that “wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart (will, emotions, reason) will also be.” People’s choices and actions are shaped by the things they cherish most.

Rather than living in the present and putting our focus on things that we can’t take with us when we die, Jesus wants us to focus on what we can send on ahead of us. As a member of the body of Christ, keep your focus daily on those things that are eternal and let’s serve the Lord together with 20/20 “spiritual” vision. You’ll be amazed at what God can do through His people when we stay focused.
