Psalm 133:1 - Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
A teacher once told her class to bring a clear plastic bag and a sack of potatoes to school. She then asked them to take a potato and write on it the name and date of the person that they refused to forgive in life's experience and then to put those potatoes in a bag and carry them around. Naturally, over time, the condition of the potatoes deteriorated until they began to stink and decay. Churches have relationships that break the unity and burden the fellowship.
God wants us to see how incredible it is for the people of God to live together, worship together, and serve together in unity. He called it good. Pleasant can also be translated delightful. It is delightful to be a part of a family and church fellowship that is delightful.
God wants us to value unity so much that we would pursue it, chase after it, sacrifice for it, and find it delightful. Are you bringing unity and health or are you a disputer?
As a pastor I have heard a lot of tombstone jokes, most of them bad. My favorite is about Odd Evans and his tombstone. He told his wife that when he dies, he did not want his name on his tombstone because he has been called Odd all of his life. He told her to simply leave it blank where you normally put the name. So, everyday people walk through the cemetery and see this blank tombstone and say . . . "that's odd."
It is odd to find a unified church. Would you pray today that you would be a part of making our church odd?
