1 Kings 8:27 - "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!"
Impressive! We are attracted to that which is impressive, lavish, and exceptional. God allowed Solomon to build a temple for His name. No structure in history was more impressive though not for its size. It was constructed with $2 billion worth of gold; 34 tons. The cedars of Lebanon were logged, transported to the port of Sidon, floated, transported down the Mediterranean Sea, and brought ashore in Joppa for transport up the 2500' climb to Jerusalem. Solomon forced 30,000 laborers to move the timber and work the construction. He also had 70,000 potters and 80,000 stonecutters working on the Temple and its furnishings. Everything about the project was unrivaled at the time. Impressive.
Solomon gave a dedication address and wondered at the beauty and power of our God. Look, no structure can do justice to God.
We become so impressed with the small things of earth. What is man who has but a breath in his nostrils? For that matter, what is heaven and the heaven of heavens in size and grandeur compared to our God? Behold, there is nothing to compare to Him.
Our circumstances, our challenges in this moment do not compare to Him. He is Lord. Stop looking at the impressive obstacles that you face. You want impressive? Look to the cross where the fullness of the Godhead bodily endured the disgusting shame of the cross to redeem this broken world, our sin-cursed souls, and His church. God has shown His love for us, in that while we were sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
