Jeremiah 32:17 - ‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.”
Jeremiah preached when the foreign army from Babylon was destroying, occupying, and conquering the city of Jerusalem. It was the worst of times. The darkness of this moment was unparalleled in the nation’s history. Jeremiah preached a message of warning and judgment to the leaders of Israel, but they ignored it and put him in prison for preaching it. Jeremiah knew that the destruction was coming.
While Jeremiah was waiting for an uncertain future of death, captivity, imprisonment, or stoning, God told him to buy a field. Land was cheap around Jerusalem with an army approaching. God said to buy land. God’s command became an amazing source of assurance for Jeremiah. It meant that God had a future for Jeremiah and the Holy City. “Buy land” promised that this captivity would end, Jeremiah would live, and the city would be inhabited again by God’s people. In this context, Jeremiah made this amazing statement: “There is nothing too hard for You.”
What hopeless circumstances have you broken-hearted and worried about today? What intimidating, frightening future do you dread? The journey may be rocky and the days to come hard, but God has promised to finish the work that He has started in each of us. Our future is eternal life and a home in heaven. Buy land! Your sin has consequences for the immediate future, but God has a plan to work all things for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. As a church, God says to trust in the One who has all power to sustain her and build her up.
