Isaiah 42:1 - "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.”
School days at Pickens Elementary in 1975 began with the class standing and reciting the pledge of allegiance. We would all put our hands on our hearts, face the flag, stand up straight, and would always end “with liberty and justice for all.” When I thought of justice, a courtroom scene with a seated judge came to mind.
Justice is a much-discussed subject in our day. People demand justice, march for justice, and devote their lives to the pursuit of justice. The entire criminal justice system exhausts itself for justice. But ultimate justice is not the work of any man or even institution. Justice comes from God.
God is the final judge. He will have every human who ever lived stand before Him. We are all guilty of sin against God. Our sin earns us death, separates us from God, and destroys all things beautiful. But God would rather forgive than judge. He sent His Servant, the Lord Jesus Christ, the One in whom He delights. God put His Spirit upon Him. He took our penalty, our place, and our punishment. John wrote: “And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1).”
The day will come when we stand before God and the books will be opened. All our sin exposed with nothing hidden. The promised Messiah, Jesus, will take the place as our Advocate with the Father. If we believe, then we will be saved.
Rejoice in Jesus today because He has brought liberty and justice to all who have trusted in Him.
