Isaiah 40:15 - "Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, and are counted as the small dust on the scales; Look He lifts up the isles as a very little thing."
Veterans inspire me. When I was a boy, Dr. John Maxwell Harden was our next-door neighbor across the street. I spent some time in his house playing with his grandchildren who were my age and being stitched up by Dr. Harden in his clinic. He was the only surgeon in the state of South Carolina certified and approved to do emergency surgery on the President. He was also a veteran who had served in World War II and Korea as a MASH doctor and surgeon. We loved to play with his medals and helmet and belt and put on his uniform. But make no mistake, Dr. Harden was larger than life as a war hero. I was in awe of him.
I love my nation. I am a flag-waving patriot who cries at war movies and thanks God for the sacrifice of so many to keep us free. America stands as a mighty nation.
To God, however, all nations are just a drop in the bucket. In the eyes of God, nations pose no threat, present nor rival, and cause no fear. “Why do the nations rage and imagine a vain thing” the psalmist said. Our God reigns over all the nations. He is Lord of heaven and earth. They are counted as dust on the scales.
Our trust is not vested in our nation as much as we love her. Our hope is not found in Washington. Our future is not secured by the government of any country. Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and His righteousness. Remember today, that our God reigns and we can rest in His grace, power, and might. We are secure in Him.
